Advisors must follow federal law regarding students’ privacy. The Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, also know as the Buckley Amendment, protects students’ privacy. This act applies to all institutions receiving federal funding. It provides students the right to request, review, and amend educational records and to limit disclosure of their records.
