I'm not sure online learning is right for me. Can you help me decide?
Ivy Tech offers five different types of distance learning courses. These course types give students a number of choices in how they take a distance learning class. When you search for classes in the course schedule, you will see one of five codes if the course is a distance learning course. A few guidelines as to whether or not each course is the right fit for you are provided below.
An Online Only course (often just referred to as an Internet course) is a course taken online. The only time a student may need to go to a campus or testing center is to take a proctored exam. This normally occurs two to four times per semester and will be explained in detail by the instructor in courses where it is required.
If you use the following phrases to describe yourself, then an online class may be an excellent choice for you:
- I enjoy learning independently, but am comfortable asking an instructor for help if I don't understand something.
- I am organized and maintain a schedule of all the things I need to get done. I don't generally need to be reminded to complete things on time or even a little early.
- I am comfortable using a computer and the Internet to do things like viewing a web page, sending and reading email, typing papers in a word processing program, and finding information on the Internet.
- I learn well from reading and reflecting on what I have read. I don't need to listen to a lecture to help me understand course content.
- I have at least six hours to devote to each course I am taking and can make more time if needed.
What are the different kinds of distance education courses offered at Ivy Tech Online?
Distance education courses at Ivy Tech Community College are coded in the student information system using the following definitions for delivery mode and fee assignment purposes. The college charges an additional per-credit hour course fee for all types of courses delivered at a distance. In addition, all types of distance education courses shown below follow the College’s distance education course calendar as detailed in this policy.
- Online Only: Course sessions take place online, although students may be required to take exams at an approved proctoring site (no more than two exams for program level courses and no more than four exams for academic skills advancement classes). Most activities can be completed on your own schedule, although the course could involve scheduled activities such as online office hours, chats, or other “real-time” presentations. These activities must be posted on the class schedule at the start of the class and should be optional to students.
- Online and Face-to-Face: Students are expected to attend laboratory, practical, and other activities on campus. The online component includes significant activities which require engagement between faculty and student as well as from student to student. Notes on specific dates and times of meetings will be provided to students through the registration system at the time of registration.
- IP Video: Students attend class at a designated time and place while the instructor may be at a different location. Students and instructors will communicate with each other throughout the scheduled time of the course. This course may be supplemented by online content. • Online and IP Video: Students in these courses are expected to participate via IP Video as well as the Internet. The required use of video resources and facilities may take place on the student’s home campus.
- Synchronous Online Video: These video courses use IHETS Interactive technology (live webcast) and can be accessed by the student via any broadband connection so they may be able to participate from an off-campus location. A microphone/headset is required as well as a PC/Mac computer meeting the currently published minimum standards. Broadband connectivity (cable modem, DSL, or LAN/T1 or higher) is required. Students with dial-up access will not be able to participate in these classes from home and will need to arrange for viewing site on campus or at a learning center. A webcam may be required by the instructor. Students and instructors will communicate with each other throughout the scheduled time of the course. This course may be supplemented by additional online content, but at least 2/3 of the contact hours are assigned to the synchronous video activities.
